'We would ask our fellow citizens for their quiet support,' says Simon Myerson of the Leeds Jewish Representative Council

The Leeds Jewish community will hold a vigil in Millennium Square in Leeds city centre on Wednesday evening from 6.15pm to 7pm. The gathering follows the killing of hundreds of Israeli citizens by Hamas terrorists on Saturday.

"Every government’s first obligation is to protect its own citizens. That is a matter for the government of Israel. The deep Political differences that exist in Israel itself, and in the broader Jewish community, pale into insignificance when contrasted with that overriding obligation. We will support the government of Israel in protecting its citizens.

"We would ask our fellow citizens for their quiet support. A great many of us either have family or very close friends in Israel. We feel their anxiety and their pain at the loss of 700 people in a single day – the greatest loss of Jewish life in a single day since the Holocaust. We are grateful to all of those, and there are many of them, who have reached out so far. It means more than we can say.
