EXCLUSIVE: The Irish Mirror joined Green Party leader Eamon Ryan and MEP candidate for Midlands-North-West on a canvass around Galway ahead of the European and local elections on June 7.

“We always look out for bikes and charge points and solar panels,” Green Party Senator Pauline O’Reilly joked as she walked down the driveway of a Galway home.

Mr Ryan can often be seen as a “boogeyman” for voters outside of Dublin. And, while Salthill isn’t exactly deep in the countryside, the presence of several uniformed Gardaí and a Garda car did not go unnoticed by many in the seaside town. As he walked away from a doorstep that was not very receptive, Mr Ryan explained that you can “tell within a millisecond” of greeting someone whether they want you there.“Canvassing is the most fascinating art. Sometimes, you just get a sense at the door. I start with a broad question; How are things? What is your sense of things? And has Minister Ryan had much abuse on the canvass trail in recent weeks?“I was in Dublin last week and a fella and a woman came up. I was at a door like this.

The Irish Mirror was out with the Green Party canvass for over an hour and the topic was not raised once. This is despite the Integration portfolio being held by Green Minister Roderic O’Gorman. When the 2019 European and local elections were held, there was a Green wave across Europe off the back of Greta Thunberg and the “Fridays for Future” school climate protests.

The tot was six weeks old and was born prematurely. His arrival inspired Dad Daniel to contest the local elections in Connemara North.“I was trying to think coming up to this election of being out with Niall, being out with Pauline wanting to contribute.“That is the driving force for all of this.”
