Clown cars packed the Crowne Plaza Northbrook where the World Clown Association Convention was in town March 7.
From bottom to counterclockwise, meet Kynisha “Daisy the Clown” Ducre of San Jose, California, director of education for the World Clown Association, Irene Spudic of Merrillville, Indiana, Linda Clark of La Crosse, Wisconsin, Mary Ann Lund of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Jose Gonzalez of Mundelein, Tracie Patterson of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Rich Gottschlich of Park Ridge, Roberto Ramirez of Back of the Yards and Paula Biggio of Park Ridge.
“Everybody needs a clown,” said Paula Biggio of Park Ridge, a clown and makeup artist. “Everybody needs to laugh, to let it out. Biggio and her husband of approximately 25 years, Rich Gottschlich, own a company called Laugh it up. Biggio has been a clown for 39 years. “Camps like Clown Camp are really trying to revitalize the art form and to get many young people involved and interested in it, but it’s a long journey,” Biggio said.
About 80 people were registered for the convention series. There were professional development classes, a face painting competition, a vendor room, parade tips, magic and more. Clowns were scheduled to participate in this year’s Chicago St. Patrick’s Day parade on March 12. Of the convention, “You get to learn new skills, refine old ones, and just be open to what’s to come,” Ducre said.
