It comes as Gardaí investigate claims a transgender inmate has made serious threats against officers working at the prison.
The violent offender, who legally changed her name and was granted a gender recognition certificate in 2020, was sent to the prison for five-and-a-half years after being found guilty of threatening to kill or harm her mother in 2022.Gardaí were this week called to the prison to investigate claims she has since made threats against several female prison officers.this afternoon, Prison Officers’ Association Chief Tony Power said the alleged threats were “quite serious”.
He said the Irish Prison Service must bring forward a policy on transgender prisoners as soon as possible. “It is becoming a more common thing where we have transgender people coming into prison and it is our priority to keep our members safe,” he said.
