Matt Doherty came on as an 81st minute substitute against Belgium on Saturday.

Matt Doherty believes it’s time to give something back to the thousands of Ireland fans who travel the world supporting the team.

The Wolves ace has hailed the Green Army - and he wants to give them something to cheer this year, as the country faces into a tricky Nations League campaign in the autumn. “Irish supporters support you home and away, through thick and thin, spend a lot of money following the national team around the world,” said Doherty, who came off the bench late in Saturday's 0-0 draw with Belgium.“Azerbaijan, Georgia, wherever, there’s always a lot of fans travelling.“We owe the fans something to cheer about and hopefully that will be this year.”

Looking ahead to a daunting Nations League group with England, Greece and Finland, Doherty insisted: “It’s a good group, some big games. “At international level, especially with Ireland, we seem to bring out our best and perform at the highest level we have when we play against top nations, so it’s another challenge for us.”
