Garcia: ‘We’re going to have to tighten up the belt’: Sakai on county spending

Former judge Peter Sakai speaks Monday, Feb. 14, 2022 in front of city hall about the release of the Collaborative Commission on Domestic Violence?•s two year report. The CCDV, which Sakai helped helped initiate in 2019, is a collaborative between the city, county and community-based organizations to reduce the rate of domestic violence in the community. Sakai is currently running for Bexar County Judge.

While Wolff showed a willingness to invest in projects whose benefits were primarily cultural or aesthetic, Sakai tends to emphasize basic infrastructure needs. Sakai praised county commissioners for last week approving a $5,000 homestead exemption, a proposal introduced by new Commissioner Marialyn Barnard, the lone Republican on the Commissioners Court. It’s an idea that Sakai has championed throughout his campaign for county judge.

There’s also the fact that home appraisals in Bexar County are rising so fast that they overwhelm the impact of tax-rate cuts.
