We recommend in the GOP primary for Texas Railroad Commissioner | Opinion

Incumbent Wayne Christian faces challengers Dawayne Tipton, Sarah Stogner, Tom Slocum Jr. and Marvin “Sarge” SummersThis editorial is part of the Dallas Morning News editorial board’s slate of recommendations for the 2022 primary. This board supports a healthy Texas oil and gas industry, with firm safety and fair environmental regulations to guide a free market. In 2021, we were disturbed that Texas Railroad Commissioners failed to meet those standards after deadly power outages.

Still, Wayne Christian, the commissioner on the Texas Railroad Commission who oversees those natural gas producers, has not accepted responsibility or taken action to hold the industry accountable. Whereas utility regulators named the power plants that failed, set new weatherization rules, inspected the plants last year and fined those that didn’t meet standards, our oil and gas regulators have not.

Of those running, we recommend Dawayne Tipton, an engineer with a firm understanding of oil and gas production and the good sense to enforce existing regulations before adding more.
