We tried Melton Mowbray pies from Tesco, Asda, Aldi, Sainsbury's and more
The pies, named after the market town in the county of Leicestershire, are known worldwide and loved for their fresh - rather than cured - meat, which is the grey of roast pork, rather than ham-like pink, and seasoned with salt, pepper and nutmeg or mace.
After this week's heatwave, stock was running low in some of the stores, so while we were able to pick up a large pork pie from most places, with Tesco we had to make do with the mini ones. Morrisons' own was out of stock, so we had the Pork Farm brand from there instead, which is also sold elsewhere.
On looks alone, once out of the packets, we all agreed that Lidl's had the nicest shape to it - the hand crimped crust giving it that home made feel. Aldi's had a similar crimped edge, but looked a little too burnt around the edges. We all liked the flavour of the Co-op's and Tesco's, both the filling and pastry, and Asda's meat was particularly flavoursome with the pepper-seasoned pork having a touch of spice to it. That was the only one that seemed to have a little too much jelly on the inside of the crust though, which we all felt let it down.
