We’ve needed investments in our workforce, so Raytheon stepped up | Opinion
RI&S’ new state-of-the-art Advanced Integration and Manufacturing Center opened in September 2021 in McKinney, Texas.Texas urgently needs a skilled labor force in manufacturing jobs. In July, a report from the Texas Workforce Commission found that there are more than 800,000 jobs available for touch labor workers.
That is why we applaud a new registered apprenticeship program launched this month by Raytheon Intelligence and Space, the U.S. Department of Labor and Collin College. The program, which will provide work-based training with three different touch labor tracks, is planned to start next year. After completing a classroom component of the program, students will begin working full time for Raytheon earning a salary. Depending on the program track they select, apprentices will graduate with certification that is nationally recognized within two-to-three years.Raytheon officials tell us that, even though they do not require apprentices to stay on after graduation, the goal is to teach students the manufacturing skills they need to transition to a full-time job at the company.
