Northern leaders say they “haven’t given up” on further Government funding after investment zones were effectively scrapped in the Autumn Statement.

Dozens of authorities across the country scrambled to submit bids within a matter of days after the policy was announced by former prime minister Liz Truss and her chancellor Kwasi Kwarteng in September.

with little commitment to workers’ rights, environmental protections or benefits to the public purse. She said her authority had been hoping to attract high-skilled jobs, particularly in the textile sector. Asked where the change of direction leaves the bid, she told: “We really don’t know. One of the problems is that the announcement comes out first and details are sadly lacking.

“In particular, we think Calderdale can be the future of manufacturing textiles, we were looking for high paid jobs, not a load of warehouses. “As we felt all along, this was a great wheeze of an idea from Liz Truss and Kwasi Kwarteng but it wasn’t thought through,” she told“It caused confusion, it’s wasted our time and the local authorities’ time. What I really hope with all this talk and noise around university areas is that it’s places like Bradford and Huddersfield, rather than Cambridge which is the tradition of government.
