Saint Peter's

In his absence, Rupert, who has an easy rapport with Ndefo in the paint when on the court together, stepped into the void alongside Hassan and Fousseyni Drame, the 6-foot-7 twins who also have demonstrated marked improvement, as well. Whether diving for loose balls or deftly passing to each other in the interior, each Peacock has played a key part in recent victories.

Last spring, Ndefo entered the transfer portal after leading the nation in blocks. It had been a challenging season for the Peacocks, who practiced in the late Marist High’s gym and played games without fans at New Jersey City University, a Division III college’s facility, while their arena was renovated. Holloway was angry but did not ask Ndefo to stay. When Ndefo returned two days before school started, Holloway had Ndefo explain why he wanted to come back.

There were also softer moments on the road. Playing in the MAAC, where each road game is a bus ride away except for the annual trip to Niagara and Canisius, Holloway rewards his teams with milkshakes following victories. But when the Peacocks pulled off the upsets of Kentucky and Murray State in Indianapolis last week, they could not keep up the tradition.

“After the game, I had a big reality check myself,” he said. “I decided I’m going to do things my way, and whatever happens happens.”
