Jazz hands at the ready, we've got Tommy Cooper's Fez, Peter Kay's suit, a sausage-firing gun, and Jane McDonald's dress
There’s not many places where you can get to see the likes of Tommy Cooper’s fez, a ‘sausage-firing gun’ and a dress worn by cruise legend Jane McDonald all in the same building. It could be argued that the £13m museum’s arrival comes at a time where Blackpool feels ready for a bit of rejuvenation. But the truth is the seaside town has always been home to a magic that keeps people returning year after year.
As expected, The Blackpool Tower Circus gets a huge mention within the circus area which, having first opened its doors in 1894, remains the longest-running show in Blackpool. You can try circus skills, learn about legendary clown Charlie Cairoli, put on silly costumes and see a lion tamer’s stick which is embedded with visible bite marks. Quite rightly, the area also manages to address the elephant in the room by showing how the circus stopped using animals. It would be amiss not to mention it.
It’s been nine years in the making for the museum, which spans more than 1,000 sq m. Initially planned for The Pavilion Theatre inside Winter Gardens, the decision to develop the Grade II*-listed building into a museum was eventually decided to be too much of a challenge. Lady Dodd said: “Ken performed in Blackpool throughout his working life from 1953 to 2017. From 1962, Ken topped the bill and held the record for six seasons at the Blackpool Opera House with sell out shows, twice nightly. Over several years he performed in numerous Sunday concerts in the Blackpool Grand Theatre during 'the lights'.
One of the museum’s biggest selling factors for families will be the fact that visitors can return again to Showtown anytime they like for the 12 months after first purchasing their ticket. It means people can pop in for an hour and take in the exhibits, and then come back another time to enjoy another part of the museum. With plenty to explore, as well as future events in the works alongside rotating exhibits, it’s a good offering.
