The only knock on Bedard is his size. He’s 5-foot-9 1/2, which makes some wonder if he will be more suited to play on the wing than at center in the NHL. But there’s nothing small about him, otherwise. “You don’t ever get used to it,” Bedard said, with a laugh. “But I’m not outside much when it gets that cold.Bedard averaged almost two points per game as a 15-year-old in the WHL after gaining exceptional status. He had 51-49-100 in 62 games as a 16-year-old last season, and is close to blowing away those numbers this season. He has 42-43-85 in only 34 games.
When Regina played Wednesday in Calgary, the upper deck of the Saddledome was opened — it’s usually cordoned off for junior games — and a crowd of 17,223 was announced, more than attend many NHL games.On this day, there’s a buzz inside Regina’s Brandt Centre a few minutes before faceoff, a feeling more like a rock concert than a hockey game.
Bedard’s first couple of shifts were nothing special. He turned the puck over twice, trying to make tricky passes to teammates who either couldn’t handle the pass or couldn’t think on his same wavelength.
