A science teacher in Wales has been banned from teaching after consuming half a bottle of wine during her lunch break and then returning to class. Rhian Williams, a former head of chemistry at Ysgol Gyfun Gymraeg Bro Myrddin in Carmarthenshire, drove to a supermarket on May 9, 2023, to buy flowers for a colleague. She ended up purchasing a bottle of white wine, which she drank half of in her car before driving back to school.
\She then taught a small year eight class of pupils with additional learning needs. Colleagues noticed Williams' unusual behavior that afternoon and alerted the assistant head teacher, Rhian Carruthers. Carruthers found Williams to be 'overly happy' and received an unexpected hug when she asked her to leave the classroom. Carruthers deemed the embrace out of character. Williams confessed her actions to Carruthers, who discovered the half-drunk bottle of wine in Williams' car. \Mrs. Carruthers, who has worked at the school since 2017 and considers Williams a close friend, spoke at the Education Workforce Council (EWC) fitness to practise hearing. She described Williams as 'a wonderful person' and a skilled educator who was well-liked by her colleagues. Before the incident, Williams had an impeccable teaching record. Mrs. Carruthers explained that Williams had struggled with adjusting to blended learning during the Covid-19 lockdowns, leading to a loss of confidence and her stepping down as head of chemistry. This resulted in two periods of absence from work, the latter lasting half a year, with a return at the end of March 2023. Williams was absent from the hearing but submitted a statement expressing deep regret for her actions. She stated, 'I'm deeply ashamed about what happened on that day. I'm not proud of what I did but I take full responsibility for what I did.' She added that she had no plans to return to teaching. Williams had a long history at the school, joining in September 1999 and leading the chemistry department until the Covid pandemic in 2020. Since leaving teaching, she has dedicated her time to volunteering and helping others. Mrs. Carruthers noted, 'She's in a much better place now.' The EWC committee ruled that Williams' actions, involving arriving at school and teaching a class while under the influence of alcohol, constituted unacceptable professional conduct. They imposed a prohibition order of at least two years, effectively banning her from teaching indefinitely
