The beloved auteur’s latest quirky comedy has heart as well as his trademark mischievousness.
This is down to two things: firstly, that the film takes place in 1955, in a fictional, isolated desert settlement in the American southwest, rather than in the present; and secondly, the fact that its depiction of lockdown is only a small portion of a much larger story about love, loss and American ingenuity.
We meet Augie , who is en route to a convention for junior stargazers and space cadets, where his son, Woodrow , will be one of five preternaturally bright teenagers to receive prizes for a series of ingenious inventions, from a laser gun which shoots lavender-hued rays to a machine capable of projecting images onto the moon.
