'It was a lonely journey down from Belfast but the players put us in a position today to compete for a Leinster final and that’s what we were looking at all year, to try get back to a Leinster final and we put ourselves in a position right down to the wire to get into that.
In the end, Wexford were within a whisker of a Leinster final, four weeks after it could hardly have seemed farther away.
Kilkenny had failed to win seven of the previous nine League and Championship meetings between the counties going back to 2018, while Wexford had beaten them in the Championship in each of the last two years. Still, Wexford had the elements in their favour in the second half but Kilkenny lorded possession in the third quarter. By the 43rd minute, Paddy Deegan’s third point from distance put them in front and they were never led from there as they bossed the middle third.
Still, they enjoyed a stroke of fortune with the decision of referee Liam Gordon to award a 52nd minute for a foul by Liam Ryan on Eoin Cody. The offence was clearly outside the area and didn’t appear to cover the criteria for a black card/penalty with a further two covering Wexford defenders.
