Simon Bassett, Duke of Hastings (Regé-Jean Page) was Bridgerton season one's leading man. Bridgerton season 2 sees him entirely disappear. It's noticeable.
However, while Jonathan Bailey certainly makes a fine leading man as Anthony during season two, and his story with Kate Sharma well and truly swept us up, we couldn't help but feel the way they handled the Duke's absence seemed a little inept. We want to say this loud and clearly – we're not knocking the 'one Bridgerton at a time' format, or Jonathan Bailey as the new leading man. The unique framing keeps the story fresh, and Jonathan is well… Jonathan Bailey.
After a while, the more often we saw Daphne, there to share her wisdom about marriage to her clueless older brother, the more it became a constant reminder of what was missing. This isn't down to Phoebe Dynevor's portrayal either, this is simply down to the words that have been put in her mouth to explain something that, until season two's release at least, was easily explained away in interviews and chats with the cast.
For him to not only be missing off-screen but entirely unavailable for Anthony's wedding to Edwina seems hollow and bizarre. Lady Danbury would have made sure he was there, certainly, if Daphne had not demanded it. There are social occasions and then there are massive family ones, and his absence would've certainly left the Ton talking.Maybe he did finally show up to Anthony's far more successful marriage to Kate, but we never saw it.
