So far, those in receipt of Fuel Allowance, the Living Alone Increase, the Working Family, Carers Allowance and Disability Allowance have been named as groups expected to qualify for the bonus. Speaking outside Government buildings, Minister McGrath explained that the social welfare bonuses coming in the budget “will not be on a scale comparable to last year”.

The Minister for Social Protection has also stated that she is looking into extending the scheme for all schoolchildren regardless of their age. “Minister O’Gorman has set the target of reducing childcare costs by 50 per cent,” he told the Irish Times. A government source told the Independent: “Welfare rates will go up by at least €12 a week and there will be a double payment for those who are in receipt of the fuel allowance before Christmas.”More information has been released regarding energy credits to help people cut down their electricity and gas bills. This is according to proposals being finalised by the coalition ahead of Tuesday’s announcement of Budget 2024.
