They aren't feminist utopias
A small but influential group have been making noise about the need to stop trans women from using women-only spaces look like? The sci-fi author posits a future in which women are blessed with the power of electricity – they can electrocute others, even kill them. Women can now walk through the streets safely at night while men cower in the shadows. Is this paradise or dystopia?
If you believe some of the more prominent voices, it’s because women-only spaces are sanctuaries for sisterhood, to which I say: just talk to someone who attended an all-girls school and you’ll be quickly disabused of that notion. Seriously, though: Bathrooms? Yes, there is the odd cheering moment where you successfully source a tampon off someone, but that doesn’t justify some of the downright hagiographical prose around the loo.
I edited a feminist publication; I’m not immune to the concerns around protecting female spaces. But misty-eyed grandstanding sucks up oxygen from other issues. The threat to survivors of domestic abuse and sexual violence isn’t trans women, but the chronic underfunding and lack of government support driving refuges and service providers to closure.
