'I'm always being real'
A documentary is coming that is about to document in ways that no one else has ever documented before. The 174 minute feature, titled You Can See Everything, details disgraced Theranos entrepreneur Elizabeth Holmes’ final days at home before reporting for her prison sentence.
The film, created by comedian Nathan Fielder and filmmaker Lance Oppenheim, debuted at Telluride Film Festival this week – much to the surprise of audiences who had no idea that it existed. Fielder and Oppenheim made the film in secret in the weeks before Holmes went to prison, where she is currently serving an 11 year sentence for fraud after falsely claiming that her company’s blood testing devices could diagnose cancer and infectious diseases.
“What begins as an intimate portrait of an enigmatic felon becomes a mind-bending three-year journey into the abyss,” says the official documentary teaser, which was shared by A24 this week. They also shared a one-minute teaser featuring an intense conversation between Holmes and Fielder, in which the former CEO tells him she is “always being real.
” Fielder, who has become known for his stranger-than-real-life projects, was rumoured to be making a documentary about Holmes earlier this year, though the existence of the film – which will land in cinemas next month – was not confirmed until this week. The comedian is probably best known for his HBO series, The Rehearsal, a show that blends a documentary style of filmmaking with humour and the simple idea that in life, you can actually, and very elaborately, rehearse anything.
Fielder also starred in and created The Curse, a black comedy series also starring Emma Stone, as well as docu-reality series Nathan For You, in which he attempts to give entrepreneurs advice on their struggling businesses. Seeing Fielder’s name attached to this project is a surefire way of knowing that this will be far from a ‘regular’ documentary. His style of interviewing is severe and unwavering, often creating atmospheres that are deeply uncomfortable and painfully awkward.
And if the teaser for You Can See Everything is anything to go by, this project will be very much…Holmes herself hasn’t seen the film yet, but if her Twitter account is anything to go by, she seems to have preemptively given her blessing. She reshared the teaser to her page on Monday with the caption: “I’m always being real,” suggesting that her interpretation of the content may be a little bit different to the film Fielder and Oppenheim have no doubt created.
Critic Owen Gleiberman even called it… “just about the furthest thing from a ‘pure’ documentary you’ve ever seen,” and a “one-of-a-kind reality-TV-as-hangout-movie psychodrama circus. ”Why Your Body’s Differences Are Not A Problem To Solve
