In Victorian London, England, we’re introduced to an African tightrope dancer named Iris who has a secret: she can’t die. Not only does she have strange powers she can’t account for, but she has no memories of her life before ten years ago. There is one man who seems to hold the answers to the mystery of her true identity: the young, mysterious, wealthy gentleman, Lord Adam Temple.
I wrote the book to say something about socioeconomic inequality. Many stories set in Victorian England tend to romanticize the period, but this was an era of rampant racism and imperialism , as well as deep economic stratification. While London’s supernatural marginalized fight and kill each other for an unimaginable cash prize, Lord Adam Temple and his ilk watch the game from their ivory towers, safe and amused at the mayhem.
