Pharmacist and managing director of Meaghers Pharmacy Group, Oonagh O’Hagan, explains how to treat painful sunburn and relieve food poisoning while on holidays
The good news is there are medicines you can stock up on to make sure you avoid dampening your summer vibe, according to Oonagh O’Hagan, pharmacist and managing director of Meaghers Pharmacy Group.
Sunburn is a very common ailment that affects Irish people while on holidays, due to our pale and sensitive skin. For people who have experienced very bad burns, they can use a burn gel from the first aid section. “These are usually for people who have burnt themselves with the kettle or iron. There are some very effective ones that can take the heat out of the burn straight away.”
“They also have a UVMune version, which is great for children and men, as it has a watery texture which is very easy to apply, especially on the scalp or around the ears. It doesn’t leave a shine either. You often find men and children don’t like the sensation of creams as they can feel greasy. “We always say that if you are vomiting or have diarrhoea as a result of food poisoning, that is your body acting to expel whatever is causing the problem, so you are better off letting it run its course,” Oonagh says.
