Troy Hill is back to making plays for the Rams and he’s happy about the improvements the younger cornerbacks have made throughout training camp at UC Irvine.
“I picked up the torch where left off,” Long said. “He’s a very experienced guy and I think it was cool for him to see me in a new role once he got back, and just doing a lot of the things he taught me before he left.”
“Troy is a sponge and he has no ego,” Cooley said. “He’s really helpful for those guys and he enjoys seeing those guys grow because he was there two years ago, and David has gotten a lot more experienced since then, so that gelling and partnership and camaraderie between those two has been fun to watch.”
Long, a fourth-year player, noticed a familiar face hanging on the walls of the Rams’ facility. It was a picture of Todd Lyght, the former standout defensive back for the Rams who recruited Long while as an assistant coach for Notre Dame. Long listed Lyght’s individual and team achievements with 37 career interceptions and a Pro Bowl selection in 1999, when the then-St. Louis Rams won the Super Bowl.
Eventually, the Rams would prefer Durant to be a two-way corner like Hill, Ramsey and Long, but he’s already getting the hang of being a slot corner and playmaker. He recorded two acrobatic interceptions during practice last week.
