It is another reminder of how our high streets have changed that none of the businesses are still trading in the premises captured in this picture, even though it is not particularly old.
The Watford Observer is delighted to share pictures from the archive at Watford Museum and this week we recall this scene looking towards the market place from the corner of Clarendon Road from around 1990. The museum’s volunteer archivist Christine Orchard said: “This wet view of the High Street looks from the corner of Clarendon Road towards the market place – today, the white building just above the bus is Five Guys, and the store occupied by Next is now Moon Under Water.“I wonder if anyone remembers the kiosk, shown in this image with a ‘Watfordwide’ banner on it? I seem to recall one here for many, many years.
“None of the business seen in this photo are still trading on the High Street but Next and W H Smith are now in Atria and Comet is off Dalton Way at the bottom of the High Street.”
