All you need to know to make perfect pancake
Shrove Tuesday marks the day before the beginning of Lent - a period of fasting and abstinence. The tradition, which dates back over 1,000 years, saw people making pancakes to use up rich foods like eggs, sugar, and milk in anticipation of fasting during Lent.
Do you go for savoury fillings or sweet toppings? How long should you fry pancakes for? When should you toss it? What is Shrove Tuesday? Shrove Tuesday is the day that precedes Ash Wednesday. As it is determined by Easter, the actual date changes on an annual basis. The day gets its name from the tradition of Christians trying to be 'shriven' before Lent. Christians would go to Confession, where they admit their sins to a priest and ask for absolution. A bell would be rung to call them to Confession, which was called the 'pancake bell'. It's still rung today.
Why do we eat pancakes? Pancakes are now forever associated with Shrove Tuesday as it is a sort of all-in-one way of using up some fatty foods before Lent. The pancake features in cook books as far back as 1439 and the idea of tossing them is almost as old. "And every man and maide doe take their turne, And tosse their Pancakes up for feare they burne." .
