Using charcoal to recreate the event, a new study on one of the most famous volcanic eruptions, Vesuvius, has found that a wave of air released was so hot that it turned victims' brains to glass 🤯

The eruption of Vesuvius that famously destroyed Pompeii,, almost 2,000 years ago first released a wave of air so hot it turned victims’ brains to glass.

The 79CE Vesuvius eruption is one of the most famous – and deadly – in history, due to the extensive preservation of its victims in the surrounding area. Excavations at Pompeii have long provided evidence of a catastrophic pyroclastic flow descending on the town, a wall of hot gas and rocks moving at up to 50mph and temperatures of up to 465C.

The research team wrote: ‘The transformation into glass of fresh cerebral tissue in a hot environment is only possible if two conditions are met – the heating event is short-lived, so that the tissue is not fully vaporised, and once the diluted PDC has vanished, the body is not fully entombed in a hot deposit, a necessary condition to allow the very rapid cooling required to attain vitrification.’

Herculaneum sits almost due west of Vesuvius, slightly closer to the volcano than Pompeii in the south east. The remains studied were found in the town’s main street. The team also notes a difference in body position between victims at the two sites. In Pompeii, many victims were found in a stance known as ‘pugilistic attitude’, with bent knees, elbows, and clenched fists.
