A statement is expected later today
Boris Johnson is expected to resign as leader of the Conservatives after ministers and MPs rebelled against him. A proposed time for him to formally announce his resignation has been announced in the media.
ITV is reporting that he is expected to address the nation at 1pm on Thursday, July 7. After he addresses the nation, he will remain as Prime Minister until a successor is in place. That is expected to be by the time of the Conservative Party conference in October. The Chris Pincher scandal was the latest in a series of damning crises at Downing Street and indeed the final nail in the coffin for the PM who had, so far, managed to cling to power. The grip began to slip further however upon chancellor Rushi Sunak and health secretary Sajid Javid's resignations on July 6.A No 10 source said Mr Johnson spoke to Sir Graham Brady, chairman of the Conservative 1922 Committee, to inform him of his decision.
“The Prime Minister has spoken to Graham Brady and agreed to stand down in time for a new leader to be in place by the conference in October,” a No 10 source said. Mr Johnson will make a statement later today confirming the decision. It is being reported by ITV that the announcement will take place at 1pm on Thursday July 7.
