Where are Houston's most and least walkable areas?
With a score of 19.89, the most walkable block group in Harris County is located between Buffalo Bayou and W Gray St. to the north and south, and between Dunlavy St. and Waugh Dr. to the west and east. This area's score was dinged only because it ranked lower in a mixture of employment types. But otherwise, it represents one of the best cases of a walkable area, according to the EPA's data.
As such, two of the four criteria that go into the walkability score relate to the diversity of development to which people may need to travel. The more diverse the development, the less likely someone needs to hop in a car to get something done. The last variable measures how close nearby transit options are to where people live: the easier the access to public transit the greater the likelihood it will be used instead of a personal car.
A perfect score of 20 doesn't mean there isn't room for improvement though. Even Houston's most walkable area isn't exactly a hidden European-style gem of cobblestone alleyways.
