Costco has more shoppers each month than all other grocery stores in the area. This included Walmart, as well as ALDI, Marc’s, Giant Eagle, and natural grocery store Fresh Thyme.
Perhaps surprisingly, Walmart, which closed Friday, was not the biggest grocery store retailer in the area. Shoppers are most likely to visit the wholesale grocery store Costco before stepping foot in the supercenter, according to survey data from Safegraph.
Surveygraph tracks visitors to grocery stores using their cell phone geolocation data each month. Because a visitor needs to allow their phone to be tracked and shared with their provider, Surveygraph can only provide a sample size for each brandaround 10% of the total customer base. A visit is defined as a shopper who stays in the location for longer than 4 minutes.
Grocery store traffic has slowly decreased in the area since the height of the pandemic, with the most visitors peaking in October 2020. In 2022, a noticeable drop occurred with the natural food store Fresh Thyme, which is sometimes compared to other stores like Whole Foods and Trader Joe’s.
