“I’m leaving, because with such a privileged role comes responsibility – the responsibility to know when you are the right person to lead and also when you are not,” she said. “I know what this job takes. And I know that I no longer have enough in the tank to do it justice. It’s that simple.” First elected Prime Minister in 2017 at the age of 37 – making her the world’s youngest female head of state – Ardern has had a tough five years. In 2019, she had to deal with the Christchurch shooting, the deadliest in modern New Zealand history. On 15 March, a white supremacist walked into two mosques and killed 51 people and injured 40 others.
