Over half of those arriving by small boats made the crossing in August, September, and October last year, with the highest number arriving in August.

Most of those arriving via small boats ultimately make an asylum claim, with 90 per cent – 40,444 of 44,797 arrivals – doing this in the year to March 2023. The most common nationalities for forced returns were Albanians , Romanians , Brazillians , Polish , and Lithuanians .The UK offered protection in the form of refugee status or humanitarian protection to 22,648 people in the year ending March 2023, a 31 per cent drop on the previous year.

Some 166,420 people have been granted visas from Hong Kong, out of which 113,500 people are known to have arrived in the UK, and 21,004 have arrived through the Afghan citizens resettlement scheme andAccording to Home Office figures, in the year to March 2023 there were 126,313 grants of settled status in the UK, a 15 per cent increase on the year before.

Citizenship can only be applied for if you have held settled status in the UK for more than 12 months or have lived in the UK for 5 years or more.
