Mary Learoyd was murdered in Ilkley almost 100-years-ago, and her killer has never been found
The vast majority of murders in the UK are solved, with the killers put behind bars, but sadly there are some cases which never get solved.
Disappearance Some 95-years-ago, on August 24, 1929, an Ilkley woman was went out on a Saturday night to visit the cinema, but did not return home. She was seen later in the evening by someone who knew her on Brook Street in the town near to the cinema, but never made it there. Another local, living on nearby Cowpasture Road, said they had heard a scream at 10.30pm, but did not investigate it.
Despite an intense investigation, the man Mary was seen with was never identified and no one was charged with her murder. The police investigated a number of people Mary knew, including her own brother, but none of them were ever charged.To this day, no one really knows who killed Mary Learoyd and, 95 years on, it seems unlikely that the crime will ever be solved.
