PFAS can be released into the air, and also into surface water, drinking water, and ground water, because of how they are disposed, according to a 2020 report from the Endocrine Society and the International Pollutants Elimination Network. The White House said other agencies involved in the efforts include the Department of Defense, which will cleanup and assess PFAS at Defense and National Guard locations; the FDA, which will to expand its food supply testing to estimate exposure to PFAS; and the Department of Agriculture, which is investigating causes and impacts of PFAS in the food system, and supporting research on environmental contaminants.
