“They really love me here because I’ve been very respectful with my teammates and all my coaches,” Comás said. “My teammates and coaches that knew about me. They never changed themselves just because I was gay. They treated me the same. That made me feel comfortable about it.”, who heads up English language instruction and acculturation for Latin players in the White Sox organization.
While he had the stated purpose of looking to inspire and embolden other queer people and athletes to be comfortable with themselves, Comás said he was still surprised by how much attention his announcement got. He described the reception as “thousands” of direct messages on Instagram, both of support and from other still closeted queer players thanking him for his gesture.
