Brian Gartland was also eager to highlight the strong work that has taken place off the pitch at Dundalk this year.

“I was talking to Stephen a couple of days after ,” Gartland explained, “and I said, ‘How did you do this for a few years?’

Gartland was gutted to see his former teammate and captain, someone with whom he shared four Premier Division title wins, two FAI Cups and two League Cups, leave Oriel Park. “So that was really hard for us because on a personal level, we're close. It was one of the toughest days I've had in football. I've had one or two that would have cost the team big things so it was up there with that.”

“I made the decision a few years ago . I always thought I'd be a coach and a manager when I was playing but a few years ago I just said no, and I'll tell you straight up why. The club, he feels, is on a much firmer footing under new owner Brian Ainscough. Now it’s all about matching up the results on the pitch with the work being done off it.
