A leadership contest could now take place to find a new SNP leader, who would also become the country's seventh first minister.
The FM called a press conference at Bute House today, announcing that he would stand down following backlash from his decision to cut ties between the SNP and the Green Party.
Instead, he appealed to opposition leaders at Holyrood to "collaborate" with the SNP as they seek to run a minority administration under a new leader. "Politics can be a brutal business. It takes its toll on your physical and mental health, your family suffer along side you." A key obstacle in her leadership, however, would be the Scottish Greens, they have previously ruled out working with her over her views so it is unlikely she would command the support to effectively rule.
Mr Swinney previously led his party in Holyrood between 2000 and 2004 during the SNP's time on the opposition benches. At the age of 31, Ms McAllan would become the youngest first minister, but her portfolio in Holyrood shows she is already capable of handling a significant brief.
