CDPR announced a brand new entry in the Witcher series coming in the next few years
I’m not going to say this 100% rules out Geralt returning, as plans can change, and since The Witcher 3’s release, Geralt has become an even larger icon in both gaming and now on TV with Henry Cavill’s portrayal of him, so revisiting him could be too tempting to ignore, “new saga” or not.
But besides Geralt, of course the most natural second choice to lead the game is Ciri, Geralt’s surrogate Witcher daughter who was the focus of the story of first three games, even though she was not the playable star.
Another idea I’ve heard banded around is what if this game let us play as the sorceress Yennefer instead, promoting her from supporting character and love interest to the actual star of the game. This would present its own unique set of challenges, as it would shift The Witcher from a split between swordfighting and sigils to mainly just pure magic. And this is still “The Witcher” so it would be a bit odd to have the game star someone who…is not a Witcher.
I am heavily leaning toward Ciri with Yen being a key character in the story, but I don’t think we can fully rule out the return of Geralt, despite CDPR’s past comments. We likely will not know the answer to this for some time, and we’ll see where we end up then.
