is among the most fiercely debated issues in America. A spate of shootings—most recently at an elementary school in Uvalde, Texas where 19 pupils and two teachers were killed—have brought renewed attention. Yet the topic is remarkably little studied.

This is largely due to a lack of funding. In 1996 lobbying by the National Rifle Association led to a ban on federal funding for research that might “advocate or promote gun control”. The Dickey amendment, as it was known, did not explicitly prohibit research on gun violence, but it obliterated the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention budget for research into firearms.
