Why Houston Astros' Kyle Tucker doesn’t wear batting gloves
Houston Astros Kyle Tucker hits a 3-run home run off Philadelphia Phillies starting pitcher Aaron Nola in the third inning during Game 1 of the World Series at Minute Maid Park on Friday, Oct. 28, 2022, in Houston., is one of about a dozen big leaguers who chooses not to wear batting gloves when he’s at the plate.
Tucker doesn’t have a highly technical reason for why he prefers his bare hands on the bat, it’s just something he’s done since his early days as a high school player in Tampa, Fla., and he’s stuck with it. “Like my freshman or sophomore year of high school, I probably ripped a pair of batting gloves and just never got another pair and just learned to hit without them,” Tucker said before. “That's just kind of how it started and I just never really felt the need for them, really.”
Like most baseball players, Tucker can be superstitious at times and has thrown on batting gloves at times to get out of a slump. He started this season 4-for-46, soagainst the Blue Jays in April. Another slump followed in late May and once again, the batting gloves came to the rescue as Tucker broke out while wearing gloves for 10 straight games, probably the longest stretch of his career.
“Probably not right now,” Tucker said of the possibility of wearing gloves in the future. “If it's like freezing cold and I can't feel my hands, I'll probably throw them on … but that's just something I do every now and then, just kind of randomly and try to mix things up.”
