“I don’t think it would be out of the question that if the case came down after May, the payment cost pause could extend a little bit longer,” Luke Herrine, Assistant Professor of Law at the University of Alabama tells TIME. “But the Biden Administration would have eliminated its justification for continuing to extend it much beyond what it takes to resolve the legal dispute.”In the meantime, the administration is already considering structural changes to student loan plans.
