Two years on, a cross-border rail review is still to be published and campaigners want to see light at the end of the tunnel:

The golden age of Ireland's railways has well and truly ended, with far fewer stations and lines in use than in decades long since passed.

High-speed rail improvements between Cork, Dublin, Belfast and the north-west of the island have been considered as part of that work. Arup, the consultancy firm that has undertaken the review, told BBC News NI that it completed its work last December. Mark Gleeson from the group, Rail Users Ireland, says the review's prompt release is essential for the development of the railways.
