Will Alabama families get P-EBT? Alabama hasn’t reapplied for school meal money program.
Kristee Martin is getting used to life without a federal program that helped her feed her children.
The P-EBT program, which was started by the United States Department of Agriculture at the beginning of the pandemic to provide payments for eligible children who didn’t receive school lunches because of virtual or hybrid learning, has helped over 500,000 Alabama families. Alabama children got their last allocation in December.
When Dothan City Schools switched to remote learning for a few days in January during the height of the omicron surge, Hanks and other community groups came together to feed students who would have otherwise gone without meals. “We’ll see a big need for food banks if P-EBT goes away, and we will be there to try to fill that void,” said Hanks.P-EBT allows families to buy food at any store that takes SNAP, with a goal of providing parents with needed flexibility.
