House of the Dragon star Ewan Mitchell uses method acting to get in the mindset of Aemond Targaryen. Mitchell, the second actor to play Aemond Targaryen, took over the role years after Aemond claimed the mighty dragon Vhagar. The move made Aemond the most powerful dragon rider, which proved to be a dangerous prospect after Aemond lost control of his dragon and unintentionally killed Lucerys Velaryon , the second-born son of Rhaenyra Targaryen , one of the potential heirs to the Iron Throne.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY While House of the Dragon may have put Aemond Targaryen in a painful situation, it has only given his actor the perfect chance to explore the character. Of course, since Aemond is such a complex character with a profoundly different personality from his actor, it can prove difficult for Ewan Mitchell to actually get into his character's head.
I’m quite serious, probably way too much. I think method acting gets a bad rap nowadays, but if you consider it [in relation to] people’s time, it’s certainly not a bad thing. For Aemond, I definitely stayed in a state of character, because his temperature is so high, and I’m quite calm and collected. So instead of fluctuating between the two, I’d find a middle ground that I could relax into between takes. For me, it made it that little bit more work efficient.
Yet, after igniting the war, Aemond will have no choice but to involve himself. He is the rider for the biggest and most experienced dragon, and the Blacks cannot afford to have her sit by. Thankfully, Mitchell will have the chance to fully embrace his character, as House of the Dragon Season 1's biggest mistake will not be repeated. Showrunner Ryan Condal has already confirmed that there will be no more gigantic time jumps or recasts.
While Aemond will need to be a fighter going forward, it remains to be seen how he will acknowledge his role in Lucerys' death. It is an open question if Aemond will admit that the murder was a mistake, or if he will be proudly pretending that he completely intended to kill the heir to House Velaryon.
