Why colts interim coach Jeff Saturday didn't throw challenge flag on Isaiah Rodgers near-interception.

The play seemed like a breaking point for Indianapolis.

Middle linebacker Zaire Franklin was flagged for an illegal blindside block on Rodgers’ return, a 15-yard penalty that got the Cowboys into the red zone. Franklin later said he was told he couldn’t go back toward his own end zone to make a block on CeeDee Lamb, who was looking at Franklin when he made the hit.

Dallas scored four plays later, starting the 33-0 fourth-quarter run that turned a 21-19 nail-biter into a Cowboys rout.“Upstairs, had done a good job of telling me, ‘Hey, it’s on the ground. You can see the ball clearly touching the turf. They’re not going to overturn this one,’” Saturday said. “So no reason to waste a challenge or timeout there.”“I actually had the flag in my hand,” Saturday said.

Another NFL head coach might have thrown the challenge flag even though he knew the play wasn’t likely to get overturned, simply because of the magnitude of the play and the possibility that an overturned ruling would give the Colts the ball. Rather than rolling the dice, Saturday chose to stick with the information he was getting on the sideline.
