On August 24, several residential staff contacted Stanford administrators with concerns about training, such as the risk of COVID exposure and being asked to work 11 hours a day for over a week without what they felt was fair compensation.

Dissatisfied with the school’s response, some students came together to form SCAARE. On September 1, the organizing group, led by about 20 RAs, sent the Stanford administration a letter asking the university to: provide a virtual alternative for large, in-person training events; increase RA salary and cover the cost of all room and board for student staff; provide fair compensation for staff training; and involve RAs in the Res Ed decision-making process.

“Frosh RA’s know that our job is a lot of work,” an RA in a large freshman dorm who preferred to stay anonymous told. “We do it because we love the frosh. And it seems Stanford is all too aware of this fact and uses it to take advantage of us.” “University teams thoroughly cleaned the co-op residences prior to students moving in and provided seven-day-a-week disinfecting of high touchpoints through the early-arrival period.
