Travel expert Eoghan Corry explains that Ryanair's decision to forgo airbridges stems from cost efficiency and faster boarding times. The airline prefers using buses to transport passengers to the plane, as it allows for quicker loading and unloading. Ryanair also avoids the fees airports charge for airbridge usage and the additional costs associated with hiring airport crew. By utilizing their own stairs, Ryanair can keep ticket prices lower.

If you regularly fly with Ryanair you will notice that you nearly always have to walk to get on the plane - and sometimes the journey includes a bus.

You might not realise that Ryanair has a smart reason for forgoing the airbridge - and it actually benefits you in the long run. You can actually load passengers faster if you bring them out by bus and put them all on and then take them off again.

Ryanair actually modified their airplanes to install stairs to allow passengers to board their planes this way, according to Simply Flying. They pay Boeing the optional fee to add them to their Boeing 737 fleet as these planes don’t need stairs to allow their passengers to disembark when using the airbridge.

By using their own stairs, Ryanair can avoid these fees, which are normally already added to the price of other airline’s tickets when passengers are purchasing them.
