In an offseason that so far has been full of quarterback moves, there is still one team that is yet to make a significant change: the Carolina Panthers. On Tuesday, ESPNThe Panthers are unfortunately stuck in a very much non-ideal situation under center. Carolina decided to trade three draft picks for former Jets quarterback Sam Darnold last offseason after cutting Newton. Then, they exercised Darnold’s fifth-year option before he even played his first game in Carolina.
As of now, Darnold is really the only viable option Carolina has to be their starting quarterback. The Panthers’ lack of draft capital essentially kept them out of the sweepstakes for any of the veteran quarterbacks on the trade market this offseason and many other free agent starting options have signed elsewhere — Mitch Trubisky with the Steelers, Jameis Winston and Andy Dalton with the Saints and Marcus Mariota with the Falcons.
This is all what makes the openness to bring him back more than a bit strange. There are a couple of reasons that Imake sense: the Panthers are desperate for a starting quarterback option that isn’t Darnold and Newton is a familiar face to the organization and a fan-favorite player.
