After fleeing Kyiv at the star of the war, Ksenia Schnaider is starting to rebuild her company again.
woke up to the sound of bombing in Kyiv on the first day of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, she didn’t register what it was at first. “It was around four in the morning and I heard explosions, but I didn’t realise what was happening, so I just carried on sleeping,” the designer tells. “Then my mum started calling like crazy, so I picked up. She said, ‘The war has started.’ It was the worst moment of my life.
As the war began to spread to western Ukraine, Schnaider and her husband made the difficult decision to flee the country – first attempting to cross the border at Poland before successfully making their way into Hungary. “We didn’t actually have a plan; we just jumped into the car,” Schnaider continues.
Since launching Ksenia Schnaider a decade ago, the brand has found international acclaim – in part thanks to anworn by Bella Hadid back in 2017. “At first we were just producing small collections and we were very successful locally,” the designer says. “Then I created a pair of jeans, which were created from two pairs I’d deconstructed, and somehow it became a trend.”
