Following Child Q, and a lack of data on strip searches, Matteo Tiratelli asks why there is not greater public debate on this issue.
cover the period between 2018 and 2021. They suggest that across London between 6,000 and 9,000 people are strip-searched under Pace powers every year, with about half of those cases involving the exposure of “intimate parts”.targeted at people from black, Asian and minority ethnic
communities, and about 3 per cent targeted women. More troubling, the Met’s data shows that between 500 and 800 children are strip-searched every year in the capital, with 100 to 200 having “intimate parts” exposed in the process. We can use the police portal data to piece together a similar picture for the rest of the country.
It’s difficult to drill down into these numbers because, again, there is a huge amount of missing data. For example, in some years, more than half of cases were reported without a record of how old the person was. Still, it appears that nearly 60 per cent of custodial strip-searches target people from black and minority ethnic communities, 5 per cent or 6 per cent target children, and about 10 per cent target women.
People who are strip-searched once in custody may not have yet been formally charged with a crime. And even if they go on to be found guilty, that is no reason toFor centuries, the British police conducted stops and searches without any legal framework whatsoever.
Over time, police reformers have worked to limit and legalise these discretionary powers. Ultimately, this may prove to be an impossible task. But to not even have the discussion, as is currently the case for strip-searches, is a real political failure.
