59-year-old Christine Ryan donated a kidney to her son, Stephen, aged 32, who began dealing with health issues when he was two and later went into kidney failure
Her son Stephen began having health issues at the age of two, following a severe lingering gastro bug. When he was eight years old, a succession of kidney infections led to confirmation that his kidneys were damaged.
Since then, he has been undergoing dialysis three times a week, but in March his family found out his mum was a match and could donate her kidney. “I was expecting it so I was keeping myself active. I didn’t feel the fatigue. I didn’t have down days. I met someone in the hospital who had donated and she was six weeks post-surgery. She said for some reason she felt like crying constantly. I didn’t get that.
His mum said: “It’s unbelievable. He works from home so he starts at 8.30am and finishes at 5.30am. Then he goes out for a walk. He’ll be gone and might meet up with friends and they go play pool. He could be out for a couple of hours and then he’ll come home.
